Under the 8th European Development Fund (EDF) of the Guyana Sea Defence Programme-Detailed Design and Tender Assistance (SESPAP) within the Institutional Capacity Building Activities (ICBA) on Guyana’s Sea and River defences (2005) key personnel in the firm collaborated in the conducting of a Socio-Economic Survey and Public Awareness Programme (SESPAP) in Regions 2, 3 and 4 for the Sea and River Defences Division (SRDD) of the Ministry of Public Works and Communications and the European Commission in Guyana.
Our tasks included:
- Identifying the criteria/specific indicators by which the socio-economic landscape of the coastline in Regions 2, 3, and 4 can be defined;
- Relating economic and social interests to sea defence intervention by way of determining the interest to be protected,
- Address the feasibility of introducing, over time, some form of cost recovery based on the importance of what is to be protected and the use of Sea and river defences,
- Creating a GIS database with land-use and other related information that can be used in the valuation estimations,
- Providing adaptation options to risks and potential disasters posed by climatic events, and
- Designing a public awareness programme on sea defence management.
